This elegant thoroughbred bay mare was inspired by a photograph I captured during a photoshoot for a painting commission.
Combined with the gentle breeze lifting his mane and forelock, the scene had a wonderful sense of life and movement that I knew would translate beautifully into a painting.
Working in professional Pan Pastels I built delicate layers of colour, capturing the soft coastal light and the subtle tones of his coat while retaining the velvety, painterly quality that is characteristic of my work.
Among the many wonderful displays, this magnificent Andalusian horse and rider, dressed in traditional Spanish attire, immediately caught my attention.
This portrait of a beautiful Grey Thoroughbred mare was commissioned as a special gift.

To ensure I captured each horse at its very best, I visited them to carry out a dedicated photoshoot, photographing each one individually before developing a series of compositional sketches for my client to consider.
