Bay Thoroughbred In Blue Headcollar

Original Pan Pastel Horse Portrait

This painting was inspired by a commissioned photoshoot for a portrait painting with this handsome dark bay Thoroughbred.

For the commissioned portrait, my client requested that I paint him without his headcollar, creating a timeless and traditional likeness. However, as I reviewed the photographs afterwards, one image in particular stayed with me and inspired me to create this separate painting for my own collection.

I was drawn to his alert expression, elegant profile and the striking contrast between his rich bay coat and the blue headcollar. Rather than distracting from the portrait, the splash of colour adds a contemporary feel, beautifully complementing the warm tones of his coat while enhancing the overall composition.

Created in professional PanPastels, I used soft, painterly layers to capture the depth and sheen of his coat, together with his intelligent eye and calm presence. This painting celebrates not only the beauty of the Thoroughbred but also those unexpected moments of inspiration that often emerge during a commissioned photoshoot.
