This elegant thoroughbred bay mare was inspired by a photograph I captured during a photoshoot for a painting commission.
While photographing her, she suddenly turned to look back over her shoulder with such a gentle, inquisitive expression that I knew I had found the perfect composition for a painting. It was her beautifully kind eye and quiet curiosity that first drew me to the subject. There is a softness and intelligence in her gaze that reflects the trusting nature of the horse, inviting the viewer to pause and share the moment with her.
Working in professional pastels I built rich, velvety layers of colour, capturing the warm tones of her glossy bay coat while retaining the painterly style that is characteristic of my work.
My aim was not only to create a faithful likeness, but also to convey the calm presence and gentle character that made this mare such a memorable subject.
