Max - Irish Sports Horse

This portrait of the handsome Irish Sport Horse, Max, was inspired by a photograph I captured during a photoshoot. At that moment, something beyond the camera had caught his attention, and his alert expression, pricked ears and proud stance immediately drew my eye. Combined with the gentle breeze lifting his mane and forelock, the scene had a wonderful sense of life and movement that I knew would translate beautifully into a painting.

Working in professional Pan Pastels, I sought to capture not only Max's striking appearance but also his intelligence, elegance and quiet presence. The soft, painterly layers allowed me to explore the subtle highlights across his rich coat while preserving the warmth and atmosphere of the moment.

The beautifully crafted bridle added another dimension to the portrait, and I particularly enjoyed painting its intricate leatherwork and polished fittings, which provide a striking contrast to the softness of Max's expressive features. My aim was to create a portrait that celebrated both his athletic beauty and the calm confidence that made him such an inspiring subject.
