While photographing this beautiful Grey Thoroughbred mare for a commission, I was fortunate to capture a brief, unguarded moment as her attention was drawn to something in the distance. Her alert gaze, elegant head carriage and softly lifted expression gave the image an immediate sense of life and curiosity.
Bathed in the warm light of an autumn afternoon, her silvery coat became a canvas for an array of subtle colours and shifting shadows. It was this ever-changing play of light, together with her gentle presence, that first inspired me to recreate the scene in Pan Pastels.
Rather than simply recording her likeness, my aim was to capture the atmosphere of that fleeting moment—the warmth of the season, the beauty of natural light and the quiet dignity of a horse completely at ease in her surroundings.
