The Dance

Original Pan Pastel Painting

While photographing a herd of Friesian horses, I was fortunate to capture this fleeting moment as Zara and Hidalgo galloped across the field before suddenly changing direction in perfect harmony. For an instant, their powerful movements became beautifully choreographed, giving the impression that they were dancing together.

It was a moment full of energy, elegance and joy, and I knew immediately that it had to become a painting. The strength and athleticism of these magnificent horses is balanced by their grace and playful spirit, creating a composition that celebrates both the power and the beauty of the Friesian breed.

Using Pan Pastels I built rich layers of colour while retaining the soft, painterly quality that I love. My aim was to capture not only the movement of the horses but also the sense of freedom and connection they shared in that unforgettable moment.
