Flo - Chestnut Horse Three Studies
Three Original Pan Pastel Sketch Studies
This series of three PanPastel sketch studies was inspired by still images taken from a video I recorded of a beautiful chestnut mare during a lunging session. As she worked around the arena, I was fascinated by the elegance, rhythm and athleticism of her movement, and these fleeting moments provided wonderful inspiration for a series of expressive studies.
Two of the sketches capture the mare in motion, exploring the changing balance, energy and flowing lines of her stride. The third portrays a quieter moment as she stands resting between exercises, offering a gentle contrast and revealing her calm, attentive nature. Together, the studies celebrate both the athleticism and tranquillity of the horse.
Created using professional PanPastels, these sketches focus on capturing the essence of the mare rather than fine detail. With loose, painterly marks and soft layers of colour, my aim was to convey her grace, strength and character while exploring the beauty of the horse in both movement and stillness.
