There is something wonderfully peaceful about watching horses at rest. Inspired by a series of beautiful reference photographs, I combined several images to create this composition, capturing a quiet moment of companionship beneath the warmth of the summer sun.

Two horses lie completely at ease on the  grass, enjoying a well-earned rest, while the handsome bay Thoroughbred remains quietly watchful, half-dozing yet instinctively aware of his surroundings. This subtle interaction reflects the natural herd behaviour of horses and the reassuring presence they offer one another.

I was able to build soft layers of colour and texture that enhance the velvety quality of the medium while capturing the rich sheen of their coats, the play of light across their musculature and the tranquil atmosphere of the scene. My aim was to create a painting that celebrates not only the beauty of the horse but also those peaceful moments that are so often overlooked.

This piece was a genuine pleasure to create, and I am grateful to Heather Tweedie  for kindly allowing me to use her inspiring reference photographs.
